From the Professional Gardeners' Guild

Anna McPhun

Anna studied for her HNC Horticulture at Elmwood College Fife - taking
three part time gardening posts while on this course, one at Aberdeen Botanical Gardens.

The Professional Gardeners' Guild gave her a three-year Traineeship at:
‘The Garden House’ Devon,
‘Osborne House’ Isle of Wight
‘The Botanic Garden of Wales’

Anna completed her Traineeship in August 2011. She is one of a small number to complete with Distinction, with her report marks from each garden some of the highest seen.

From a Nuffield Travelling Scholar

Ellis Luckhurst

Ellis Writes: "Thanks to the sponsorship and opportunity offered by Nuffield and the Studley College Trust I was able to travel to 9 countries on four different continents to study ways of extending the seasonality of vegetable production. As a result of this opportunity I gained valuable knowledge and experience that allowed me to develop my own consultancy business, and thus help to improve the practices and profitability of Cornish vegetable growers. I would very much recommend a Nuffield Scholarship to anyone working in agriculture, and would like to thank the Studley College Trust for their kind sponsorship of my studies."

From Tresco Scholars

Peter Adams

Peter finished school with seven ‘O’ level and three ‘A’ level subjects and planned for an outdoor life in horticulture. Volunteer work at Trevano Estate Garden and Penwarne Gardens built up his practical knowledge and completion of an Honours Degree in Horticulture at Duchy College at age 21 where he developed his basic horticultural knowledge. Peter’s home is in Cornwall and he was already familiar with Tresco so was delighted with the opportunity to train in the challenge of naming and learning the growing techniques of the range of exotic tropical plants in the gardens. At first he was very apprehensive about conducting parties but became so successful at it that the visitor’s tips were very generous. As is usual for the ‘gardens students’ Peter quickly joined in the local activities of the Tresco Cricket team. After Tresco he took a post at RHS Garden Rosemoor and his career continues to expand.
