Tresco Abbey Gardens

The Elizabeth Hess Scholarship at Tresco Abbey Gardens in the Scilly Isles is sponsored by the Studley College Trust.

A brief overview.

The Elizabeth Hess Scholarship at Tresco Abbey Gardens in the Scilly Isles is sponsored by the Studley College Trust but the training and accommodation is provided by the Tresco Abbey Gardens. Unlike most academic scholarships, this offer is a year’s practical training for up to three students who plan a career in Botanic Gardens. It is very valuable for those who already have a basic training and qualification in practical horticulture and are ready for the next step which will enhance their personal skills and kudos.

Tresco Abbey Gardens have been under the ownership and management of the Dorrien-Smith family since 1834 and have become a collection of plants which is unique in the British Isles and which botanists regard as one of the most interesting in the world. Plants from the Southern hemisphere, which cannot be sustained on the mainland, grow in glorious mixture in the maritime climate of the Islands.

The Scholarship gives students the opportunity to live on Tresco Island for a year from September and to become one of the team of gardeners to learn and work. Mr.Mike Nelhams who is the Curator of the Gardens and Supervisor of the Scholars in training is an Associate of Honour of the Royal Horticultural Society in recognition of the high standard of the Scholarship Training in the Abbey Gardens and is himself a former scholar.
