PGG Trainee 2018 - 2021
Before applying to the PGG, I was working part time at a local family run nursery where they encouraged me to explore my interests in horticulture.

Whilst working, I went to Pershore College to study the RHS Level 2 practical and volunteered at Croome Court (National Trust) in Worcestershire a day a week. I then applied to the Historic and Botanic Gardens Training Programme HBGTP where I received a year’s placement at Osborne House (English Heritage) on the Isle of Wight. This placement really consolidated my enthusiasm for a career in horticulture and I naturally wanted more training. This lead to me applying to the Professional Gardeners Guild.

The three years I spent training on the job at the renowned gardens of Highgrove, The Savill and Valley Gardens of Windsor Great Park and The Garden House on the edge of Dartmoor has set me up competently and skilled for my career ahead. The three gardens are of very different styles and management structures providing me with stimulating and varied training.Over the traineeship, I have received funding to complete the Cross Cut and Maintenance of Chainsaws, Compact Tractor, WoodChipper, Strimmer and Brushcutters tickets which are all very desirable for employers. Additional to practical training, I completed three reports with the final report commenting on the management and efficiencies of the gardens. The PGG traineeship has given me the opportunity to work and train in fantastic gardens obtaining unique skills from each. The PGG also provides accommodation with each placement which allowed me to commit to three years moving across the country without the worry of finding housing.

After graduating with a distinction, I am now working at Hidcote Manor (National Trust). I am confident in my new job role and feel the training I received has set me up to be a diverse and skilled gardener. I am looking forward to my career ahead of me.
